Born in Taiwan, he entered the film industry in 1977 and has shot over 40 films in Taiwan and Hong Kong. He has closely collaborated with Hou Hsiao-Hsien since 1984 and has shot many of Hou's films, including The Time to Live and the Time to Die (1985), Dust in the Wind (1986), The Puppetmaster (1993, Golden Horse Award for Best Cinematography), Goodbye South, Goodbye (1996) and Flowers of Shanghai (1998). In Hong Kong, he has worked with Ann Hui on My American Grandson (1990), Summer Snow (1995) and Eighteen Springs (1997). He first worked with Wong Kar-Wai as camera operator on the second unit for Fallen Angels. He recently photographed Tran Anh-Hung's third feature A la Verticale de l'ete, shot on location in Vietnam.
